    Phonics and early reading

    Our Reading Promise

At Fowey Primary School we love reading!

We teach early reading using the programme Read, Write, Inc. The children learn the sounds and how to blend the sounds to read words. We teach Read, Write, Inc for 45 minutes every day in a group which is at the right level for your child. All children are assessed each half term by our reading leader, Mrs Warnham.

In reception, the children are taught set 1 sounds. This includes all the single letter sounds and some ‘special friends’. Special friends is a term used to describe two letters together making one sound such as ch, sh, th, qu, ng and nk.

Once the children know these sounds well, they learn to blend the sounds to read words such as m-a-p and s-h-o-p. We use a frog called Fred to ‘Fred talk’ the word and help us read words confidently. When we can confidently read words, we read them in the context of short stories.

As the children progress, they learn to read Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. They apply their knowledge to more complex reading text and are encouraged to develop fluency in their reading.

We appreciate the support of our parents and carers in helping children learn to read. Reading books at home together is incredibly important. The children should read their school reading book to you but please remember to read stories to them too! This not only encourages them to foster a love of reading but also gives them life-long skills that they can apply to the whole of the curriculum and beyond.

There’s no better way to end your child’s day than to share a bedtime story.
