At Fowey Primary School our aim is to open the door to the world beyond our town for our children. We want children who leave Fowey Primary School to have a sense of place and to be full of knowledge and wonder for the world they live in, ready to take on challenges with confidence and pride.
Fowey Primary School provides a wide range of activities and experiences aimed at capturing children’s talents and interests. Personal development is taught in a range of ways throughout the children’s school journey. For example:
At Fowey Primary School we C.A.R.E about our world, our learning, each other, our families, our community and ourselves. We celebrate our values by having 'Focused Value' every two weeks. Using the progression of CARE we focus on one particular aspect of CARE and the children demonstrate this in their day-to-day participation in school and beyond.
COLLABORATION
Here at Fowey, children appreciate the importance of learning together and sharing our knowledge. They understand that through learning and collaboration, they can open doors and create pathways. Their successes will drive forward their ambitions.
ASPIRE
Our pupils know the importance of having the determination to keep going when things are difficult. Children at Fowey understand that at times they may fail, but we support them to learn from their failures and go on and achieve their dreams.
Through our curriculum offer, we encourage pupils to be curious and aspire to learn about the world in which we live. By asking questions, exploring perceptions, challenging points of view, and harnessing their inquisitive nature, they increase their understanding of the world and consider their contributions towards it.
RESPECT
The children at Fowey respect other ideas and work. We support them to find what they are good at and provide opportunities to celebrate and respect all achievements. We encourage our pupils so that they all feel success, which supports their happiness and develops their self-respect. We show respect for our school community and the community which we serve, and want to instil this respect in our pupils.
EMPATHY
We encourage our pupils to celebrate the differences between all people, cultures, and faiths. We place high importance on our relationships education and use an enquiry approach to develop pupils’ abilities to respectfully disagree. By learning about the world in which they live and the people within it, they have a better understanding and mutual respect for all.

We have introduced Lyfta as a whole-school approach to strengthen our focus on citizenship and personal development. Through real-life stories and immersive experiences from around the world, Lyfta helps pupils explore identity, diversity and community, while developing empathy, respect and critical thinking. This work supports our commitment to promoting British Values and deepening pupils’ understanding of protected characteristics, helping them to grow into thoughtful, inclusive and responsible citizens. We have gradually begun to introduce this to assemblies and learning across the Autumn term and from Spring 2, we will visit Lyfta time weekly.
Money Sense

Each summer, we take part in NatWest MoneySense to ensure all pupils develop strong foundations in financial literacy. The programme helps children understand money in real-life contexts — from saving and spending to budgeting and making informed choices — in an engaging and age-appropriate way. By revisiting this learning every year, we build pupils’ confidence and independence with money over time, supporting their personal development and preparing them with essential life skills for the future.

Throughout the year, we use Picture News as part of our weekly assemblies to support pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to strengthen learning in citizenship and personal development. Using carefully selected, age-appropriate news stories, pupils explore current events, ethical issues and different viewpoints, while developing critical thinking, discussion skills and respect for others. These regular assemblies help build awareness, empathy and a strong understanding of British Values, preparing pupils to engage thoughtfully with life in modern Britain and the wider world. Picture News also provides high-quality opportunities for digital literacy and critical thinking and analysis around points of view and the authenticity and neutrality of sources of information online. We believe this is hugely important for children growing up in a world where artifical intelligence can make almost anything seem true.

In the summer term of Year 6, pupils take part in the Positive Footprints Aspirations Project, which is designed to raise aspirations and support a confident transition to secondary school. Through workshops and real-life encounters, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, explore future pathways and develop self-belief, resilience and ambition. This project supports our commitment to personal development and helps pupils leave us with a positive mindset and high aspirations for their next stage of learning.
At Fowey, we believe it is important to give learners a range of responsibilities to help them grow as individuals. As such, our pupils are given the opportunity to lead in a variety of ways including being librarians, school councillors, Year 6 buddies and taking on roles and responsibilities in class. We believe this helps instil in our learners a sense of belonging and commitment and develops wider skills.
