Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children and close the gap between them and their peers. In 2018-2019 schools will receive £1,320 for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years, £1,900 for looked after children and £300 for children of Armed Forces families.
How we are intending to use this funding in 2016/17

Our aim is to continually improve the attainment and progress of all pupils in EYFS, Key Stage 1 and 2, particulary in phonics, reading and maths. This year we are focusing specifically on closing the attainment gap between PP children and non-pupil premium children nationally. Review of 2015/16

Improve the quality and consistency of phonics in Key Stage 1

Our phonics screening check outcomes had been inconsistent for a number of years. In 2016 however, we saw a significant increase in pupils achieving the expected standard by the end of Y1. 86% of pupils met the expected standard in total.

Out of this cohort, three children were eligible for Pupil Premium and all three met the expected standard. Towards the end of the year we purchased RWI resources for a consistent whole school approach. This aspect of phonics started in September 2016, with two days training from RWI provided, including extra development days for in-house monitoring, coaching and support. We have targeted 90% of our pupils in Year 1 to meet the expected standard in 2017.

Intervention for children in Y2 who didn't meet the Phonics Screening Check in Y1 (2015)

Specific and tailored intervention for children in Phonics was provided with much success. 93% of pupils who didn't meet the expected standard in Y1, did so in Y2.

One to one provision to be made for all children who are not in line with their peer group, for age related expectations

This was provided in many forms, for example, pre-teaching, 1:1 tutoring and focus group support.

To narrow the gap in terms of attainment by the end of KS2 in reading and maths, to be within 10% of all pupils nationally

The objective for reading has been achieved (but can still be improved upon) with PP pupils achieving 63%, compared to a national figure of 71% for all 'other' pupils (gap of 8%).

Our KS2 reading result for all pupils was 69%, with PP pupils achieving 63% (in school gap of 9%). In terms of progress, analysis shows that not enough of our higher ability PP children scored highly enough in the reading paper. This is to be a focus for 2016/17.

However, the attainment outcomes are not as positive for maths, with a fall compared with national 'other' pupils. Progress for maths at KS2 for PP pupils was similar to that of non-PP pupils within the cohort.Improving attainment/progress in maths for all pupils is the main driving force behind the school development plan for 2016/17 alongside the Pupil Premium Strategy. The school has made strong progress over time in closing the attainment gap, but could have achieved more within maths.  This remains the priority.

To provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities to children supported by PP funding

This has been achieved with pupils supported with funding for curriculum trips, residentials to Camp Kernow and Bude. Furthermore, pupils were supported with music lessons and uniform costs.
